Vigernon du Pic Merlot 2004
A soft slightly earthy Merlot which is refreshingly low in alcohol level.
Many Merlots from the Languedoc (or the New-World) tend to be fairly hefty in alcohol,
rarely below 13/13.5%, this tends to dominate the fruit flavours.
Merlot is an early ripening grape, so if left on the vine for too long or exposed to excessive heat,
sugar levels and consequently alcohol spirals upwards. This wine is an interesting riposte to the
'Sideways' declaration 'Anything but Merlot'.

Devois du Perret 2003
A red blend of three grape varieties, Syrah,
Grenache and old vine Carignan. Definitely a
food wine, but unlike many of its other Southern
French red counterparts it can, and possibly should,
be had with fish. This is not say it is light but rather
that it is well integrated and medium in body. A wine of
savoury character with a decent long finish.

Midi Syrah 2003
Syrah or as the Aussies call it Shiraz is grape
that loves the heat, however this needs to be tempered otherwise the
resultant wine can achieve levels of 15% upwards with an almost Port-like concentration. It’s no coincidence that the French tend to
plant Syrah in cooler areas within hot regions (if this makes any sense!)
so that the grape gets sunshine but not too much heat. This wine is
slightly gamey with a white pepper spiciness on the nose, on the palate
it is supple and well rounded. It is grown in a high altitude region near
Narbonne called 'La Clape' in the Midi or Languedoc region. |
|
 |
Ambassade Corbieres 2003
Aromas of light berry fruit such as raspberry and strawberry with a mild hint of pepper and mint.
On the palate it is gentle and well rounded but with a fine balance and a pleasantly grippy finish.
A wine for all occasions, very accessible with broad appeal Corbieres is usually a by-word for
affordable easy drinking wine with excellent value for money.
The Ambassade typifies this in spades.

Camplazens 'La Garrigue' La Clape 2001
If there is one word which characterises the unique Terroir of the Languedoc region in the
South of France it is 'La Garrigue'. It is a local term for the indigenous wild Mediterranean
herbs that grow in abundance, Rosemary Thyme etc. These herbs have been growing here of tens
of thousands of years, such is their unity with the soil in which they grow that their flavours
can be detected in wines from the region. La Clape is considered one of the best growing regions
in the whole of the Midi. Rich in flavour well balanced with a long dry finish. |

 |

|
|
 |
Camplazanes Syrah
Château Camplazens uses only the finest Syrah grapes from their vineyards to produce this wine. Medium bodied and fragrant, showing notes of smoky plum, orange peel and herbs, the refreshing aftertaste is in the style of wines from the northern Rhône.

Château Meunier Saint Louis
Corbieres 2003
A wine of extraordinary depth. When we read the technical notes it all made sense;
blended with three varietals of varying ages of vine Syrah (15 yrs old) Black Grenache (25 yrs old)
and Carignan (50yrs old). Older vines produce much better quality grapes with more trace elements
and phelolic compounds than younger ones. The older the vine gets the lower the yield of grapes by
the time they get to be 70 yrs or more it is no longer cost effective to make wine. This wine is best
if decanted and served with a simple dish. Bags of character, with flavours of raspberry, blackcurrant and
cinnamon all very well integrated into a long harmonious finish.

Château Del Ranq Pic St Loup 2003
An unfortunate name, for this wine is anything but Rank!
If you are looking for something to put away under the stairs
so as to start a bit of a wine cellar then you don’t need to start
with the likes of Margaux and Lafite. Del Ranq is drinking very well at the moment
but it has an aging potential of six to eight years. Made using 50 year old Syrah
vines blended with Grenache vines of a similar age this wine is juicy and concentrated
and packed with flavour, however beneath all this hedonism lies a subtle but strong
presence of tannin and acidity. As the wine ages the fruitiness mellows and the tannin
and acidity will become more obvious giving hopefully a wine of excellent balance and
maturity. It's a dead cert.

'A Capella' Corbieres 2001
Most Corbieres can be classified as light earthy and fruity with a very decent price tag.
This 'A Capella' however is nothing of the sort. Made by Meunier St Louis this particular wine
is mentioned in 'Le Guide Hachette des Vins',the French wine Bible, year in year out and with good reason.
The majority of the blend is made using 50 yr old Carignan which is left on its Lees (dead yeast cells) in
new oak Bordeaux Casks for 12-14 months. The wine is then bottled unfiltered. This wine must be decanted at
least two hours before drinking without question. Aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, chocolate and cherries
on the nose, on the palette it is hugely complex whilst being sensuous at the same time. Tannins are supple
with pitch perfect balance of flavours leading to a memorable wine of harmony and charm.

 |
Fontanilles Rosé 2004
Refreshing light rosé made from the Syrah grape.
|
|
 |
Fontanilles Rouge 2004
An intense ruby colour. Medium-bodied with aromas of red fruit.
Soft and tender, this wine is ready to drink.

|
 |
Vigernons du Pic Sauvignon Blanc 2004
The fastest selling white wine in BW’s history (of three years!!)
an excellent quality dry crisp style wine that is refreshing and uplifting.
This is our House white de facto and this due to its popularity and quality. The finish
is persistent and long, ideal for long summer evenings spent in the garden huddled beneath the outdoor gas heater.
|
|
 |
Vigneron Chardonnay 2004
Dark yellow colour. Aromas of ripe fruit such as apple and as it ages notes of butter and hazelnuts appear.
Round, slightly acid which gives it a note of freshness.
To accompany fresh fish and seafood or will well pair with a cheese fondue.
|
|
 |
Viognier 2004
Viognier usually produces a rich full bodied style wine. Flavours of apricot and
orange peal are not uncommon on the nose or palette. This wine however underwent what is
known as short maceration, thus the resulting wine, whilst exhibiting the aforementioned
flavours, is dry and crisp. A refreshing wine with bags of fruit character and drinkability. Enjoy lightly
chilled with shell fish.

Macon Villages Domaine Dupre 2003
Macon is in Southern Burgundy and is best known for its big rich Chardonnay
based whites. 2003 as we all remember was a very hot summer all over Europe.
Such extreme conditions leads to massive sugar levels in grapes as they are
exposed to excessive heat. High levels of sugar leads to high alcohol after
fermentation leading to unbalanced wines of poor quality. Domaine Dupre managed
to harvest six weeks earlier than is the norm and as a consequence made an outstanding
wine that is full of flavour and yet dry and refreshing with an alcohol level of 12.5% .
An excellent example of just why Chardonnay is one of the great grapes of the world. |
|
 |
Melodia Touraine Sauvignon Blanc 2003
Made by Couly-Dutheil one of the most respected houses in all of the Loire Valley.
This Sauvignon Blanc is fruity with flavours of asparagus, citrus and Granny Smith apples.
A clean crisp dry white that is more than simple easy drinking. If Sancerre or Pouilly Fume
is your bag then heres a cheaper alternative that more than delivers in terms of quality. |
